Ministry of Justice Revoked License of Attorney Defending Political Prisoners Mikalai Dziadok and Uladzimir Kniha

On 8 August, the Qualification Commission on Issues of Advocacy in the Republic of Belarus carried out an ordinary re-certification of attorneys. The following decisions were issued:

  • Attorneys M. Onopolskaya (Minsk City Bar Association) and A. Shkoda (Minsk Regional Bar Association) were found to be in compliance with legal requirements.
  • Attorney O. Savich (Minsk City Bar Association) was deemed only partially in compliance; her certification was postponed for six months pending fulfillment of the Commission’s recommendations.
  • Attorney S. Gorbatok (Minsk City Bar Association) was declared incapable of fulfilling her professional duties due to “insufficient qualifications”.

Svetlana Gorbatok had defended anarchist Mikalai Dziadok and Uladzimir Kniha, prosecuted in connection with the “Tsikhanouski case”.

The Commission also administered qualification exams for trainees of legal consultation offices under the Minsk City Bar Association. A. Kurzova and S. Stolbunova successfully passed the exam.
