Following the arrests of attorneys carried out by the KGB among members of the Gomel Regional Bar Association, and their subsequent disbarment, an extraordinary reporting and election meeting was convened. In what appears to have been an attempt to rehabilitate itself in the eyes of the state — which demands absolute loyalty from the legal profession — the main agenda of the meeting became “personnel matters” and the election of a new head of the association.
Aliaksandr Gutsev was elected as the new Chair of the Gomel Regional Bar Association.
To recall, in May independent media reported on the arrest of at least three attorneys from the Gomel Regional Bar Association. On 23 May, KGB officers also conducted mass inspections of attorneys at their workplaces. As a result, within a month, six people disappeared from the official lists of the Gomel Regional Bar Association.
